Bungles upon bungles in the administrative jungle

I attended the press conference Wednesday in the Lobo room where Vice President of Human Resources Helen Gonzales interviewed “witnesses” to the “mistake” made by Coach Locksley.

A neutral party, outside the Athletics Department, should have done the investigating. That was Athletics Director Paul Krebs’ bungle.
Gonzales said that Shannon Garbiso’s notes did not contain witness statements verbatim but were paraphrases from witness interviews. That was Garbiso’s bungling.
There is a difference of opinion on whether Locksley swung, choked, flailed his arms around, etc. New Mexico state code states battery, Section 30-3-4, “is the unlawful, intentional touching or application of force to the person of another, when done in a rude, insolent or angry manner.” Whoever commits battery is guilty of a petty misdemeanor.
If my professor were so upset at President Schmidly during a heated departmental meeting that the professor got up and made contact with the president, would the professor get a 10-day suspension? I think not. Another bungle.
Then Schmidly talked about Gonzales and Krebs having the highest integrity, saying they didn’t cover anything up. I don’t think there is enough evidence to claim there was a cover-up. But anyone can see incompetence abounds at UNM.
The parties making the bunglings are Schmidly, Gonzales, Krebs, Locksley and Garbiso. And who is suffering now? — J.B. Gerald.
Back to Krebs. He stated at a news conference Sept. 28, “I do not believe this is a reflection of his dealings. It’s not a reflection of his character. This does not shake my faith in his leadership whatsoever.” He blamed it on the stress of coaching and said it was probably worsened by New Mexico’s winless start. But in Wednesday’s conference he said that the two issues (the “mistake” and the football record) have nothing to do with each other. Another bungle.
What side of his mouth is he going to speak out of next? I believe that some of the assistant coaches, some of the players and some of the student body have lost confidence in this system to effectively, competently lead. At what point do we stop the downward spiral, eliminate the incompetent and get UNM back to respectability again? That is when I will probably buy any UNM sports tickets again.

Pretty good analysis, Daniel, though I would disagree on a couple of things. I believe that Shannon Garbiso did her job with integrity and thoroughness. Locksley, Krebs, Gonzales, Gerald, even Schmidly have had a chance to defend themselves in numerous interviews. And what have they done? They have scapegoated Ms. Garbiso. The people keeping their mouths shut are the coaches who witnessed the brawl and Ms. Garbiso. Anybody want to bet they wish they could speak out? Any of them who decide to leave the Athletic Department surely will finally set the record straight on what they did and what they know. Meanwhile we can hardly blame them for doing as they are told to do. They haven’t been offered administrative leave with pay if they get “insubordinate,” a behavior that is interpreted with subjectivity by the boss.
The other item I would disagree about is whether to buy sports tickets. I have watched the Lobo Women in good seasons and bad, in both the Flanagan and pre-Flanagan eras, and I’ve not been embarrassed for the State of New Mexico when they’ve suffered a blowout loss. For that matter I’ve nothing against the football players. I do tend to stay away from games that are coached by guys I don’t like and instead watch Pete Carrol’s Trojans and Mac Brown’s Longhorns on TV. Sometimes I even watch UNM football and I’m impressed by the effort and improvement of the players. I’m not going to boycott Lobo Athletics in general or even Lobo Football in particular just because Mike Locksley is a bully or Paul Krebs is an unethical slime any more than I would boycott Popejoy hall because the University’s current president lacks Tom Popejoy’s ethical backbone. I don’t think I want to work for the University if the Human Resources department is led by one of Schmidly’s many lap dogs, and I’m happy that I don’t have to suffer what UNM staffers suffer in a system that is not staff-friendly.
UNM’s students and the various UNM student members of UNM athletic and other organizations are as frustrated as we taxpayers are. They didn’t create the embarrassment that they’re having to live with now. Let’s don’t punish them for the sins of the UNM “fathers” and “mothers.”

The UNM’s administration’s image is forever tarnished by their outright refusal to do the right thing. The cover up and destroying the documents pertaining to the assault on Gerald, by Locksley has affected their credibility and public trust. This article is true “the parties making the bunglings are Schmidly, Gonzales, Krebs, Locksley and Garbiso. And who is suffering now? — J.B. Gerald.”
Due to this dysfunctional administration the Student/Athletes, staff and anyone who cares about the UNM is affected. I have chosen not to attend anymore UNM football games, as I feel strongly that a stand must be taken. Schmidly, Gonzales, Krebs, Locksley and Garbiso; should do us all a favor and resign.

Okay, enough is enough it is time for Schmidly, Gonzales, Krebs, Locksley and Garbiso to get their pink slips. These people are not leaders they are corrupt and need to be dismissed!

From the Dominatrix Sex Scandal to Locksley’s assault on Gerald and other cases were the UNM administration has mishandled: This quote from Sharon Warner is true: “The similarities to the Locksley case are really quite striking, because in both cases somebody abused their power relationship,” she said. “Then the University pretended to do an investigation and the truth didn’t come out but they just said, ‘We’ve investigated; here are our findings; now go back to work.’” Until an independent investigation is performed and ALL those involved in the cover up are dismissed.
